Sushi and ramen have their own pages. The classes here teach the food that ends up on a Japanese dinner table: dashi and miso soup, a grilled dish, rice, small sides, and in one class wagyu. Both schools work from small studios in Shinjuku, with a few guests at a time. The main question is how much choice you want over the menu.

Most-reviewed first. All three run in small kitchen studios rather than restaurants.

Choosing a menu at Wa No Kokoro

Wa No Kokoro lets you pick the menu when you book. The class takes about two and a half hours, cooking and eating included, in a kitchen studio in or around Shinjuku whose address you receive after booking. If another group is booked into the same session, the choice can be narrowed to a menu that suits both. A fifth, custom menu is possible if you ask and the host agrees.

MenuWhat you cook
Menu A Okonomiyaki and yakisoba, with side dishes
Menu B Gyoza and takoyaki, with side dishes
Menu C Rolled sushi and teriyaki with yellowtail or chicken, miso soup
Menu D Set meal with a meat plate, a fish plate, a side dish, miso soup and an onigiri

Menus A and B lean on okonomiyaki and takoyaki, which are Osaka dishes at heart. If you travel on to Osaka, the city where they come from has its own food tours and classes, listed on osakastreetfoodtours.com.

Two classes at Cooking Sun

Cooking Sun teaches in a studio on the second floor of a residential building in Shinanomachi, in Shinjuku ward. The school itself warns that the entrance is easy to miss. Its wagyu class takes up to eight people for three hours and starts with a welcome tea; guests who reviewed it mention wagyu sukiyaki, dashi made from scratch and miso soup. Some were unsure how much of the cooking they had done themselves, so ask the instructor to hand over the knife if that matters to you. The sushi class in the same studio runs longer than the other sushi classes on this site and ends with tamagoyaki and miso soup next to the rolls.

Diets in a home cooking class

Because the menu is set before you arrive, these classes adapt more easily than a food tour. Wa No Kokoro offers vegetarian and vegan versions and asks you to discuss allergies in advance. Cooking Sun swaps ingredients in both of its classes for vegetarian, gluten-free and religious diets and for allergies. Tell the school when you book, not on the day. Dashi, the base of miso soup, is usually made with dried bonito, so a vegetarian version needs a different stock, and that is worth confirming.

Guests in the home cooking classes

A Polish guest in the wagyu class expected to cook every dish alone and found that tasting and shared hands-on work were enough; another guest counts seven dishes for a group of eight in three hours. The one critical review here comes from the Cooking Sun sushi class in 2023: the guest mostly watched the instructor and found the sushi simple, with California and cucumber rolls. That matches the listing, which has the fish arrive pre-sliced.

“We had a great time in the cooking class with Chieko. She is super friendly and engaging and we gained some great knowledge and skills. Will definitely be buying a special pan for making egg rolls. Professional and fun. I would highly recommend.”
Dianne · Australia · October 2026 Home-Style Cooking Class · Wa No Kokoro
“I was expecting us to cook every dish ourselves, but that might have been a bit too complicated. There was already plenty of tasting and hands-on work, which was more than enough. The teacher was very nice and knowledgeable … The kitchen was very clean, and water was included”

Iain · United Kingdom · October 2026 Sushi Making Class · Cooking Sun
“There wasn’t a lot that we could do our selves, mostly we just looked at the instructer while she was making everything. Not the best sushi either, small pieces of sashimi. Mostly cheap sushi like California rolls and rolls with cucumber. …”
