The street food walk to Senso-ji
Ninja Food Tours meets at 11:30 at a standing sushi bar in Kaminarimon Yanagi Koji and spends about two hours on the way to the temple. The listing plans an hour in the streets of Asakusa, twenty minutes at Marugoto Nippon, a pass along Nakamise Street and twenty minutes at Senso-ji, where the tour ends. Food comes from five or more vendors. Dietary requests need to reach the operator at least a week before, and vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options are limited.
Twelve dishes, a restaurant and a sake bar
Japan Guide Star meets at the police box by Kaminarimon, at Asakusa 1-3-1, where the guide holds a sign reading “Local Guide Stars”. In two and a half hours the walk covers twelve dishes and two drinks, among them monjayaki, yakisoba and okonomiyaki, fish dishes and a fish-shaped waffle for dessert. The title speaks of four eateries, while the description names a local restaurant, a sake bar and street food, and guests write about two izakaya and a dessert stop. Guests under 20 can come along without alcohol. Anything you order beyond the set dishes is paid in cash. Wheelchair users are asked to tell the operator in advance so that the restaurant booking can be adjusted.
Nakamise Street and the eating rule
Nakamise is the stone-paved approach of about 250 m from Kaminarimon to the inner gate of Senso-ji, lined by around 90 shops. Eating while walking is not allowed there. Buy your snack, eat it by the shop and then move on. The shops close in the evening, so Asakusa food is a daytime plan.
Three sushi classes near the station
Sushi Making Japan teaches at Kaminarimon 2-17-9, three minutes on foot from the station, in large classes that offer vegetarian, vegan, halal and gluten-free menus on request. SUSHI GARYU has an Asakusa branch in addition to its location near Tokyo Tower; the Asakusa branch is not wheelchair accessible, and drinks there are on a separate menu. Sushi Matcha sits under the railway tracks a minute from the station and pours sake for the length of the class. The sushi class comparison covers what you make and how long you spend at the board in each. A sake tasting room a short walk from the station, with up to ten tastings, is on our sake tasting page.
Cherry blossom on the same day
The Sumida riverside next to Asakusa is one of the cherry blossom spots of Tokyo. By the long-term average of the Japan Meteorological Agency the trees in Tokyo start to bloom around 24 March and are in full bloom around 1 April. A late-morning food walk leaves the afternoon free for the river.
