Traveling Tokyo runs two of the most-reviewed food tours on this site. Its tours here follow one pattern in the evening and another in the daytime. In Shinjuku and Shibuya you walk for three hours between small eateries, with food and two drinks paid in advance. In Tsukiji you walk for two hours with a guide and buy whatever you want to taste. This page sets the three side by side so the tickets are not mixed up.

Most-reviewed first. The two evening tours include food and drinks; the market walk covers the guide only.

The title counts three eateries and 13 dishes, the web address of the listing says four eateries, and the list of inclusions names no dish count. Some venues are in basements or on upper floors without a lift.

What the evening tours have in common

Both evening tours stop at an izakaya, a street food stall and a traditional eatery. Shinjuku adds a gastrobar; Shibuya ends with dessert. Each includes two drinks, alcoholic or not, and on the Shibuya tour the listing states that alcohol is served only from 20. The eateries are small, and some are in basements or upstairs without a lift, which both listings mention. Allergies and dietary needs should be sent in advance; neither listing promises a particular diet.

Both titles also overstate the counts. The Shinjuku title says 15 dishes while the description lists 13, and the Shibuya title says three eateries while the address of the listing says four. The Shinjuku comparison and the Shibuya page go through each tour against the alternatives in the same area.

The Tsukiji walk is a different ticket

The Tsukiji tour works differently because it includes no food. A guide takes up to ten people through the Outer Market and past Tsukiji Hongan-ji for two hours, and you pay at each stall, mostly in cash. Guests who rated it well say the guide suggested what to order and handled the paying. On Wednesdays, Sundays and public holidays the market keeps its rest day, and one guest booked a Sunday without knowing. The Tsukiji page has the market calendar.

Contact before the tour

Traveling Tokyo contacts guests through WhatsApp. Install it and check it works on your phone in Japan before the day, because messages from the operator arrive there. The Shinjuku tour meets on the west side of the station and finishes at Shinjuku Sakura Square by the southeast exit, which helps if you plan the rest of the evening.

Traveling Tokyo also stages a sumo show with a meal in Shinjuku, which is compared with the other sumo shows in Tokyo on tokyosumotickets.com.

Guests on Traveling Tokyo tours

Where guests are unhappy with Traveling Tokyo, it is the choice of eateries: an underwhelming evening with a lot of fried dishes, restaurants that fell short of the price, and on the Shibuya walk two restaurants with little about the neighbourhood. One of them still praises the guide’s English and effort. On the Tsukiji walk the comments are about guides who helped with ordering without pushing anyone to spend.

“It was not a “tour” in the actual sense, more “accompanied eating in 2 restaurants”. Our guide Hoshi was friendly and shared some information about the dishes, nothing about the neighbourhood. The food / the restaurants were very tasty. …”
